Coordination of the History of Science
The Coordination of the History of Science (CHC) is concerned with academic research, teaching, and the supervision of projects in the area of the history of science and technology. CHC privileges analysis and reflection about scientific practices and the development of science in Brazil from the social history perspective. Its current research projects are concentrated in two areas of investigation.
The first area of research, entitled Science, Technology, and Society, concentrates on historical studies of scientific practices and technological innovations with the aim of problematizing and analyzing the construction of knowledge, privileging the processes of the production, circulation, diffusion, translation, and reception of this knowledge in the various social spheres. The other area, Science, Technology, and Cultural Contexts, is concerned with historical studies of scientific practices and technological innovations with the aim of problematizing and analyzing the construction of knowledge, taking into account the relations and tensions between institutional and local knowledge and science, and other socio-political and cultural expressions.
MAST’s archival collection, as well as the primary sources preserved in other scientific institutions in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, including MCTI research institutions, are of fundamental importance for CHC’s research projects. These are also based on information collected in archives in foreign institutions, periodicals, interviews, statements, and iconography.
The results of CHC’s research are presented and discussed in scientific events for the Human Sciences; published in books, and Brazilian and foreign periodicals; and often contribute to exhibitions, talks, and other scientific dissemination activities carried out by MAST. Some publications are the fruit of partnerships with foreign institutions and MAST’s cooperation with universities and MCTI institutes.
CHC researchers have an intense exchange with research groups from Brazilian and foreign institutions which work with social studies of science and technology.
